I had a friend try and convince me the other day that this piece of abstract art they had just picked up was an amazing piece of art. How many people out there truly can appreciate abstract art? I mean really truly enjoy it and would be willing to put it up on their wall? I just never did get the point of abstract art and I have yet to see a piece of abstract art work that has really spoken to me, how about you? I like to think that over the years that I have been around that at certain points in my life I have given certain pieces of abstract art a chance. I just don’t get it I guess and I was wondering how many other people out there just don’t get it like me?
Let’s be honest when you look at most abstract art you really have no idea what it is your looking at. Most of the time even the artist has no description for what they just painted. It’s usually just a collection of shapes, lines, colors and if your lucky a few designs thrown in for good measure. Does all this stuff put together actually look like anything? Probably not…..

What about the other form of art that when you look at the painting or picture you know immediately that it’s a painting of a person, fruit, scenery or something that is identifiable at least. Normally this kind of art is referred to as representational art, why because the painting actually represents something! I love that concept, now that is art to me.
I wonder does that make me closed minded that I can never seem to find the beauty in a piece of abstract art work that others seem to find so appealing? Or is it really just a case of beauty is in the eye of the beholder and people simply have different taste? Does anyone think there is a way to “broaden” your horizons and learn to appreciate art work that seems so foreign to you.
